I am starting college in a month with the courses: Physics, Maths, Chemistry and Spanish. I would like to follow a career in aerospace engineering, but my dream has also always been to be a flight attendant.

At British Airways, we have several colleagues who have successfully pursued multiple career paths both within and outside the organisation. It is not uncommon for some of our skilled Cabin Crew members to hold dual roles, depending on their individual circumstances and whether they are employed on a part-time basis.

That being said, it is important to note that our Engineering roles here are typically full-time and involve a demanding shift pattern of 12-hour shifts on a 4 Days On / 4 Days Off pattern. Due to the intensity and regulatory requirements of both roles, particularly around working hours and fatigue management, it may be more practical to pursue each career at different stages of your professional journey.

We wish you all the best in your career decisions and future endeavours.

Thank you very much Eugenia. I appreciate your response and have further questions about what you would advise. Would it be better to pursue a career as a Cabin Crew member first and then go down an Engineering pathway? I understand that Engineering requires much more attention when it comes to education beforehand, such as a university degree. Could I complete a university course required for the Engineering roles, then apply to be a Cabin Crew member and pursue this role for a few years, before then applying for an Engineering role? Could there be any complications as to the years between my university studies in engineering and the applying for one of your Engineering roles?

Hi Zuzzana,

This would really be up to the individual and can vary depending on your goals and circumstances. The great thing about Engineering is its variety of roles. Whether you are interested in hands on work in the hangar or prefer an office based role, there truly is something for everyone. Some people pursue formal education early on, while others find their way into the industry later in life.

Given your current situation, attending career fairs could be a fantastic way to explore your options, connect with professionals, and discover what truly inspires you. There is no single “right” path, just the one that works best for you.
