From Cabin Crew to Risk Management Professional

Beginning as Cabin Crew, I always wanted to help people. Whether this be our customers or Colleagues. I then ventured into Cabin Safety Training and then Cabin Safety Training Management thanks to achieving a Distinction in my Masters Degree in Travel Business Leadership. I was proud to lead and develop a team of trainers that were responsible for ensuring the highest quality of training was delivered to ensure our team deliver outstanding levels of safety everyday. Looking to expand on my people, leadership and Training skills I made the move into the British Airways Corporate Safety and Security Team to undertake the role as the Management System Training and Promotion Manager. I wanted to use my operational, leadership and learning and development skills and my education to explore another area of our aviation industry. I have, and continue to learn how our Management System links to all areas of BA in ensure were always putting Safety and Security at the top of our agenda. In my most recent role it has incorporated all of my previous learning into a new area of aviation that is full of insights into how we manage risk at BA.

I am responsible for Training and Promotion of the Management System

The Management System is the heartbeat of BA when it comes to Safety and Security. It brings Data together from all areas of our business. The Management system brings in data from all across our business from our Cabin Crew, Flight Crew, engineers or above and below wing airport colleagues. There are many roles that then use this data to ensure we are putting Safety and Security at the centre of what we do whether that is an investigator, auditor, or member of our leadership team that make Safety and Security Decisions. My role ensures they have the right support in place to ensure they can use the Management System in the best and most effective way possible. This role also requires us to promote Safety and Security which may include promoting our Safety and Security activities, highlighting the importance of our Just Culture and elevating colleague confidence in our reporting Culture.

Networking with colleagues from across BA

The Management System interacts with all areas of our amazing business. Therefore i get to meet colleagues from across our global operation whether this be Flight Operations, Global Operations or our Airport Teams. Promotion of Safety and Security is crucial for us to always be ahead of the game. We want people to report when things don't go to plan so an an organisation we can continuously improve our Safety Performance. I enjoy seeing all parts of our business working towards a common goal of continuous improvement. The aviation industry never rests, as there is always change. This role reflects that.

Always be curious to change and always be open to try something new.

I never thought after being in the industry for over 15 years i would be where I am today. This is because i have embraced change, stayed curious and being open minded into different areas. My advice is to always take every opportunity that is given to you. Work hard, and always be honest with what you want. I have never been shy to admit that i want to progress in this industry therefore i have always been open to trying new things whilst always bringing past experiences into new roles. BA is a great place to be, we are a huge business with great people who place safety at heart of everything we do. The best thing I ever did was taking the plunge to join BA.

Launching our Management System Fundamentals Course

My greatest achievement this year is the launch of our Management System Fundamentals course. This is a course that brings our Safety and Security Practitioners together to gain deeper insight into our Management System. This has taken alot of learning and insight in order to confidently deliver to our leaders how our Management System operates.
